THE EVERLASTING ARMS UPHOLDING US

THE EVERLASTING ARMS  UPHOLDING US

Psalms 37:17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.

When Pharaoh followed Moses towards the Red Sea, his economic arm had already been broken by a series of divinely inflicted plagues on his country. As he continued in his defiance to God, his second arm--the military arm—broke as his army drowned in the receding sea of God’s judgment. Moses “stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided Exodus 14:21. As he retrieved his hand from the sea, it receded and drowned the Egyptian army.

When the Hebrew army fought against Amalek, it was noticed that when Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. Moses’ hands grew so weary, Aaron and Hur found a stone and put it under him and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. They held up Moses’ heavy hands and the battle was won (Exodus 17:11-13).

How beautifully does the Lord uphold the hands of the righteous. Even when he comes to his own end, even when his lifted hands of praise and spiritual victory grow weary, he can sit on the ‘Rock’ and rest while the victory is won with the help of brothers, family and friends. Why should we think that we must stand on our own? He, the Lord of our victory does uphold us, even indirectly through mediation.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
